Birthdays are all the time so much more fun when you are a child, and real birthday parties are a must have. My son will get some seriously hurt feelings if I don't allow him to have a friend birthday party as well as a family one. As a singular mother, I don't commonly have a lot of extra money to spend after the bills are paid, let alone to spend a few hundred on a birthday party. Here are some ideas that your son will love, and won't break the bank:
1.) Laser Tag- While this may be one of the more expensive ideas on the list, I think it's well worth it. For about 0 (in the NorthEast Ohio area), you can have 2 games of laser tag, and time spent in a party room. In my area we get discounts on a local pizza shop, and free invitations to download and print out. For me this was exquisite because not only did I not have to clean my house just for it to be destroyed, but man cleaned up after them for me!!

2.) Sleepover/Campout Theme- This doesn't get much easier. Get a few friends, a tent, and maybe a bonfire with s'mores and you are the best mom ever. Throw in a few cheap flashlights for the boys and now they have a prop for scary stories, or a great way to play flashlight tag. If weather doesn't permit a campout, you can all the time substitute a movie!
3.) Have a sports themed party. My son is assuredly into sports right now, (and is even trying to get me to not throw like a girl!) Depending on what season your son's birthday falls in there are a few ideas for cheap entertainment. If it's baseball season, take them to a local (not professional, but semi pro) game. The tickets are commonly cheaper, the crowds smaller, and yet they still get a great experience. If it's football season, take them to the local high school football game- my son asks me every week if we can go during the season!
4.) Video Game Party- This could be one of the cheapest. I don't know any boy who doesn't enjoy video games. If you have some distinct consoles, just set them up on cut off Tv's and let the boys go crazy. If you only have 1 or 2, then maybe you can borrow a console or two from friends for a day. Order pizza, have some cake, and call it a day!

6.) Personalize the party decorations! With technology these days, this is easier than ever. Put pictures on posters or banners, or set up a slide slow with him and his friends projected on a wall, Tv or computer. As a goodie item once, my son received a mixed cd with the party girls' favorite songs. This was absolutely a hit!
7.) Have a scavenger hunt! Depending on how in-depth you would like to go, you can whether make this an in-house search, or strengthen it to the neighborhood.
8.) Let the kids do it! Get small personal sized pizza crust, and a bunch of toppings. Allow each child to make his/her own pizza to make it more fun. Instead of cake, make cupcakes and allow the kids to decorate the way they want. When they get a opening to make it, it all the time tastes yummier.
9.) Dollar Theater- Our local dollar theater is pretty well kept and comfortable, and they are releases in the middle of new and out for Dvd. Take a handful of his friends to a dollar movie, and then home for some pizza and cake. Check if the movie theater will give away coupons to add to the goodie bags.
10.) To save a tiny money, have the party in the middle of meal times, and just have cake and ice cream. If the party is just after lunch time, you can save money on serving food, and plates of wasted food.
